Build Sustainable Opportunities For Women Farmers In Tavush

Life is difficult for those occupying Armenia’s rural communities. 45% of this significant demographic in Armenia (over 40% of the total population) live in poverty. Largely dependent on agriculture for income,the job instability, unemployment, and large-scale poverty particular to this complex industry in Armenia causes many people, especially young men, to leave their families and homes in search of stable incomes in nearby cities, like Yerevan, or often Moscow. In light of the mass exodus of men, women are one of the remaining hopes for the future development of these rural, agrarian regions. However, in addition to all the obstacles they already face, they bear the additional burden of being devalued members of society.

Thus, they are hard-pressed to provide their families with support due not only to the instability of the job market, but also their predetermined inability to access it. In order to contribute to the social and economic development of rural Armenia, it is critical to begin implementing projects that will create economic opportunities for rural people, particularly women, to build reliable and steady incomes and self-reliance that will contribute to the improvement of the overall community livelihood. This is exactly what this project hopes to address. Women, like the ones featured in our campaign video, are beginning to speak up about their right to be active members of society–socially, politically, and economically–and they want to let the other villages all over Armenia know that with hard work, anything is possible.
